How to Refer a Child or Young Person
If you are a professional who has had a disclosure of sexual abuse from a child or young person please call social care following your safeguarding procedures and Police before you make a referral to Coral Cove.
- Call our 24/7 helpline on 0800 183 0023.
- Our team will discuss the case and arrange an appointment.
- We will liaise with police, social care, and other agencies where necessary.
- A strategy discussion may be required before an appointment to ensure a multi-agency approach to safeguarding.
- If you are unsure whether to refer, call us for advice.
- Children and young people can call us directly for advice and support.
What Happens at the Appointment?
Comprehensive Support Includes:
Professionals will be met at the door by the Crisis support worker, for non recent exams you will accompany the child/young person and their support to the clinic room and waiting area.
- For non recent medicals the professional will accompany the child or young person to the non recent clinic room. For forensic medicals the professionals will be asked to take a seat in the professionals waiting room.
- The medical examiner will discuss with you the professional the history of the case and a agreed plan of care for the child or young person.
- The medical examiner will make sure agreement has been sort from the child or young person and guardians, if appropriate, on the plan of care.
Strategy Discussions
Please invite Coral Cove to attend any discussion. Call the helpline number for advice on sending over invites. We will endeavour to attend all strategy discussions.
The discussion ensures that risks are assessed, safeguarding measures are in place, and the child receives the most appropriate care.

After the Examination
Immediate Follow-Up
If forensic samples are taken, the police will collect them for processing. Young people will have time to shower, eat, and ask questions before leaving. They will receive a discharge booklet about the appointment and next steps.
Ongoing Support
We check in three days after the appointment to ensure the young person has the support they need and confirm any referrals we have made.
Medicals Outside the SARC
If a child is too unwell to travel or is in a secure setting, our clinicians may conduct medicals in hospitals or other locations where appropriate.
Who Conducts the Examination?
A specialist nurse or doctor.
Reports and Documentation
These will be with you within 15 working days.
